“Time in the Memory of Objects”

Two exhibitions at the Ethnographic Museum for the project realized in collaboration with students of Industrial Product Design from the University of Ferrara

Year 2022/2023

A very interesting and suggestive project that was carried out with the University of Ferrara, entitled Il tempo nella memoria degli oggetti that for two years in a row has seen the protagonists of ethnographic objects and students of the three-year course of industrial product design.

From some materials exhibited at the MET, in fact, the students have created modeling and reconstruction projects for design objects, set up and presented during the exhibition.

Theme of the workshop “The memory of the object in museum documentation”, particularly appropriate for the connection with the ethnographic heritage of the Santarcangiolo museum. The integrated learning path has seen MET become a study laboratory, where students have photographed, drawn, measured, documented and even tried to use the objects assigned to them, including winches, wheels and wagon parts, spades, threshers, saddles and scythes.

During the semester, through these materials, the professors taught them the techniques of drawing, the representation of space and physical modeling, but also “the relief of the memory of history and object”, to understand their functions, uses and the underlying practical and symbolic meanings.

Starting from historical artefacts, the students then invented new ones, materially creating reproductions based on acquired skills, experimentation and personal sensitivities, returning to MET the best ideas produced. The collaboration has also proved to be valuable for the museum as an opportunity to welcome and learn how to communicate with a young, non-local audience.
