Archive of Possibilities*

The storage area is where museums collect, preserve, and study the heritage that is not on display. It is the backstage of museum work—usually closed to the public—where ideas, new perspectives for enhancement, and development projects take shape.
The temporary closure of the MET for renovation works initiated a reorganization of the storerooms, including the storage facility located within the museum grounds, in the Meet park.

From this came the opportunity to open the doors of this usually dark and silent space to the public, combining the need for organization with the chance for exploration and engagement.

The Storage Space: Collections and Traditions for Everyone

The storage space houses the collections of the MET and MUSAS museums of Santarcangelo. The connecting thread of both the ethnographic and archaeological heritage is research carried out in the local area, which saw significant development starting in the 1970s: archaeological investigations capable of making objects “speak,” and ethnographic research alongside the collection of oral histories that narrate human experience.

Archaeology and ethnography come together in this rich and varied documentation, aimed at preserving and reconstructing the history of Santarcangelo and its surrounding region. The story is further enriched by valuable photographic archives, available to the public and researchers.

Percorso tattile serratura

A universe of objects, some arranged on open shelving, others stored in containers organized by place of discovery: the visitor’s journey through the storage area touches on a variety of themes—from the history of research and donated collections to ways of living in the region and traditional agricultural work and crafts.

This is a dynamic space, designed to adapt to the diverse needs of its visitors: audio guides, thematic videos with Italian Sign Language and subtitles, a tactile exploration path, an interactive touch totem, and a web app are all available to enrich the experience. Visits are guided by a museum staff member.

Windows of Time

The large glass windows of the MET’s storage facility, overlooking the surrounding park, host exhibitions on various themes—tied to the traditional calendar, specific city events, and special times of the year. Through these “windows,” objects reveal themselves to visitors during the darker hours, like shadows inhabiting the Meet park.
