As part of the Frammenti Santarcangiolesi series at the Baldini Library, Maurizio Urbinati presents the book Lavorare Pedalando. In sella alle biciclette da lavoro (Il Ponte, 2024).
The author shares stories and characters from his incredible collection of historic work bicycles, including those of the milkman, the barber, the street paver, the knife grinder… Bicycles that “emerge” uphill and “fly” downhill.
Il libro
The Book: Passion, happiness, freedom, enterprise, champion, and legend are just a few of the words associated with bicycles over the years. Becoming symbols of progress and modernity in the early 20th century, bicycles soon became accessible tools for the working class. A particularly unique model is the work bicycle.
These relics, telling a fascinating and epic chapter of labor history, are the focus of Maurizio Urbinati’s book. Over decades of passionate collecting, he gathered models from all over Italy, eventually organizing exhibitions across Europe, culminating in the creation of a museum dedicated to these special two-wheeled machines.
